Guidance levels are paired in intensity and rhythm: Each level contains one momentary distraction vibration paired with a continuous vibration rhythm suitable to that level. The momentary vibration mode acts as a distraction to gain the dog's attention away from his current pursuit. The continuous (more vigorous) vibration mode acts as a guidance system, motivating the dog to perform the right behavior in order to "escape the aggravation" of the rhythmic vibration on his neck (this is called "pressure").
Levels are adjusted according to your dog's temperament and excitement level at the time of use. 15 levels give great flexibility. Low levels for yard work and early training. Higher levels to match his more alert and more excited early field work. Even higher levels for higher adrenaline states such as flushing or running the wrong game.
This method is a superb training tool from the very beginning of the training process right to the fine tuning of your obedience, working or sporting dog's finest moments. The psychological and physical pressure of the collar receiver does all of the work, painlessly.
If you feel you really need the extra security of e-stimulation, choose the GT-2 or GT-3 models. They contain pressure vibration and also include e-stimulation. Lowest e-levels (1, 2, and 3) are so gentle you can put them on your own skin. In most cases, e-stimulation is rarely needed - most often used in aversion training such as snake aversion, game running, or car chasing - but they offer the traditional dog trainer both options.
Electronic Dog Training Collars are used for problem solving (such as jumping on people, chasing cars, stealing food, avoiding snakes) or for more general training (such as obedience training or hunting dog training). Aggressive behavior is NOT a suitable candidate for electronic collars under any circumstances without a behavior specialist supervising the activity.
Training should be accomplished at the lowest stimulation level that gets an attention response without causing fear or yipping pain. Your dog should look up at you when he feels the stimulation. His neck muscle might give a small twitch, but no vocalization, lowered ear set, cowering or otherwise showing fear should be apparent. Communication/Stimulation Types: Most companion dog electronic dog training collars use operator-timed continuous communication. Continuous communication lasts as long as you hold the button down (emergency shut off in about 10 sec). Many have Pager or Tone-Only options, which use only a vibration, buzz or tone to alert, direct, or praise the dog. (Vibration is a great tool for training all dogs, but particularly useful in early stage training, for young dogs, or for deaf dogs). Some have praise tones. Unleashed has an electronic dog training collar that uses ONLY adjustable vibration stimulation.
Levels: The more finesse you have to tailor the stimulation to the exact temperament of your dog and the exact circumstances of the situation, the more quickly your dog will respond and the less chance there is of over-correction. Every dog will need at least a couple of different levels depending on the circumstances. You will find that a dog who performs flawlessly in the back yard will need a higher level of stimulation to get his attention when he is outside his usual environment where distractions are high such as in the park or in the field. He may need a higher level still if he is engaged in a "high adrenaline" state such as when chasing a car, another dog or cat, or honed in on the wrong game. Dogs who are wet will need a lower level of correction due the high conductivity of their wet skin that will channel the full effect directly to them.
The number of different settings for stimulation and the way to program them is important and completely individual to each manufacturer and to each electronic dog training collar in their line. Warning tones: During more than 30 years of training, we have found that warning tones are rarely useful and often do more harm than good when used in their assumed fashion - as a warning that a more severe correction is coming. They often cause the dog anxiety while making the owner feel that they have "saved" the dog. The trainer who uses the tone to warn often depends on it to the detriment of the dog and the training process - in short, it encourages "nagging" and inconsistent handling. We don't recommend their use in this fashion. Instead, we recommend an electronic dog training collar with a tone-only feature that you can use as a command tone. If you teach the dog to "come" using the tone, you will have a remote recall that will tell him when it is time to return to you. Or you might use it as a "whoa" command to tell him when to stop his forward movement. These are two very positive and useful techniques that make a warning or pager feature valuable. A praise tone can be very useful. It is highly regarded as a positive reinforcement tool and it lends itself well to positive reinforcement (or clicker) training. It can be a very valuable tool to let a dog in the field know that he is doing the right thing. A little like the game "hot-cold", a praise tone lets your dog know when he is getting "warmer" and encourages him to continue in the direction you have praised. Summary: A trained dog is a happy dog with a happy family. Statistics show that the number one reason for abandoning a dog or giving it up for adoption (frequently to be euthanized) is bad behavior. Proper use of all of the training tools available to prevent such a tragedy is the humane option.

The Science of Remote Training
An electronic signal is transmitted from a remote handheld transmitter to a collar worn by the dog. The electronic signal is a mild tingling sensation which gets the dogs attention and distracts him from the undesirable behavior. The signal does not hurt or harm you dog, but it is unpleasant (like an electrostatic shock when you walk on the carpet in your socks). By responding to and obeying your obedience command or by stopping the undesired behavior, your dog learns to avoid the unpleasant sensation. Your dog can also be trained to respond positively to an audible or a vibration signal.
Training works best if you can correct the behavior while it is occurring. Keeping the training message clear helps your dog learn. One of the benefits of using a remote trainer is that the behavior correction can be more precisely applied in association with the behavior.
Consistency is key. Make your training message precise and keep it consistent, and your dog will understand what you expect. He’ll be happier - - and so will you.
Sometimes training is more effective when your dog associates the behavioral correction with the behavior rather than with the person correcting him. If his behavior is corrected anonymously (he doesn'tknow you did it), he will think his action caused the correction and will learn to avoid the behavior even when you aren’t there to supervise him. An anonymous correction is not possible with other training approaches.
